August is Black Business Month, a month to be recognized as one for the celebration and showcasing of Black-owned businesses across the nation. Black Business Month means more than just a celebration; it’s a call to action. This year’s theme, “We Are Together,” resonates so strongly today with the collective strength, resilience, and impact created by Black entrepreneurs and business owners. It underlines their important role in boosting the economy and creating diversity and equity.
The approximate percentage of all American businesses that are Black-owned extends to sectors like healthcare, social work, beauty salons, and restaurants. These firms meet needs and provide work and, hence, contribute to the economic development of the communities. In spite of systemic barriers to Black entrepreneurship, business owners have continued to find ways to operate innovatively and successfully and have made a significant contribution towards the nation’s economic fabric.
Black-owned businesses across the country exemplify the power of unity and community support. The “We are Together” theme also highlights the importance of allies and the broader community in supporting Black-owned businesses. Consumers, corporations, and policymakers can all play a role in the sustainability of black businesses. The following are actions that could be taken by stakeholders.
