Building Stronger Teams: People Are Our Secret Superpower

Let’s get real for a second: In a world that moves at lightning speed with constantly changing strategies and technologies, one truth remains timeless: People are our greatest asset. As women navigating leadership, entrepreneurship, and the corporate world, building strong teams is not just a skill—it’s essential. And let me tell you, it’s all about stepping outside our comfort zones and following the STRETCH process.

For me, STRETCH is more than just a model, it’s deeply personal. As I was assessing the ways in which to pivot when I got laid off, I recognized that an opportunity was right in front of me. I mustered up the courage to step into creating my own brand and business. That moment marked the beginning of this journey, one that has been filled with ups, downs, challenges, and triumphs. Being in my 50s has been an incredible blessing because it gave me the space to reflect on my life and career. I’ve learned how to step into my power, embrace vulnerability, and discover my true passion for impacting others’ lives.

And now, eight years later, I get to wake up every day excited to make a difference. But let’s be real—it’s not always easy. Only about 30% of the time does it feel like everything is flowing. The other 70%? Well, that’s about realigning myself, reframing my thoughts, and showing up with authenticity. It’s about teaching others that anything is possible with a little bit of stretching and a whole lot of building community and support around us.

So, what are you waiting for? If I can do it, so can you. Here’s how the STRETCH process helps us build strong teams and tap into the power of emotional intelligence:

S – Self-Awareness: The Heartbeat of Great Leadership
It all starts with you. Every powerful team begins with a self-aware leader. You can’t lead others if you don’t first understand yourself—your strengths, triggers, and communication style. When you stretch yourself to reflect on how you show up, you set the tone for your team. When you lead with authenticity, you invite others to do the same, and that builds trust, openness, and respect. I had to do a lot of stretching to get comfortable with who I am, and now I lead with confidence, knowing that I’m enough, just as I am.

T – Setting the Attitude and Tone: Creating a Growth Vibe
As a leader, your energy is contagious. When you set the tone for positivity, curiosity, and resilience, your team will follow. It’s about creating a space where everyone feels safe to share, grow, and support one another. Emotional intelligence helps you spot when negativity creeps in, and your self-awareness will let you know when it’s time to reset. I’ve learned to check in with myself and the energy I’m bringing—and it makes all the difference.

R – Reflecting on What We Need: Upskilling for the Win
Continuous learning is the key to growth, personally and professionally. Great teams are built on this foundation. Encouraging upskilling, mentorship, and opportunities for professional development keeps everyone engaged and motivated. Emotional intelligence helps you identify where your team might need support and where they’re already excelling. The magic is in knowing when to push for more and when to offer help.

E – Engaging in New Ideas: Innovation Through Connection
Innovation thrives when people feel safe to share ideas. It’s not just about participation—it’s about feeling heard. You unlock your team’s creativity when you listen deeply, encourage diverse perspectives, and remain open to change. Emotional intelligence ensures that tough conversations remain constructive, turning challenges into opportunities for growth. It’s all about creating a space where innovation isn’t just allowed, it’s celebrated.

T – Taking Action: Small Steps Lead to Big Wins
Ideas are great, but action is what drives change. Don’t get stuck worrying about the big picture. Start small. Those small steps build momentum, knowledge, and confidence. Emotional intelligence helps you push through hesitation and encourages your team to do the same. The key is taking that first step, and then the next one, and the next. I’ve learned that progress comes not from giant leaps, but from steady, intentional actions.

C – Change Management: Measuring, Adjusting, and Evolving
Great teams don’t just coast along. They pause, reflect, and adjust. Emotional intelligence helps you do this with honesty and objectivity, so you can assess what’s working and what’s not, without blaming anyone. Teams that consistently evaluate and evolve stay agile, adaptable, and ready for whatever challenges come their way. I’ve built this into my process, and it’s been key in adapting to the highs and lows.

H – Harnessing the Power: Celebrating Every Win
Big wins are amazing, but small wins matter too. Whether it’s finishing a tough project or simply showing up with a positive attitude, celebrating the little victories keeps the team motivated and energized. Emotional intelligence helps you recognize these moments and express gratitude. Like I always say, “when people feel valued, they show up on purpose, with intention and productivity.”
